Background

What is Cardano?

By PlatformCrypto.eu editorial team · checked on

Cardano is a proof-of-stake blockchain for payments and smart contracts. Charles Hoskinson and Jeremy Wood started the project in 2015, and the network launched in September 2017. What sets it apart is a research-first approach: its core protocols were written up as academic papers and reviewed by other cryptographers before they were built. Its consensus protocol, Ouroboros, is described by the project as the first provably secure proof-of-stake protocol.

The coin is called ada, after Ada Lovelace, the 19th-century mathematician known as the first computer programmer. Holders can delegate their ada to a stake pool to help run the network and earn rewards, without the coins ever leaving their wallet. Smart contracts on Cardano are written in languages such as Plutus and Aiken.

Supply is fixed at a maximum of 45 billion ada. What is not yet in circulation sits in a reserve and is released gradually through staking rewards and the treasury. Protocol changes and treasury spending are proposed and decided on-chain, by votes recorded on the blockchain itself.

Like any crypto-asset, ada carries real price risk: what you buy today can be worth far less tomorrow.

In four steps

How to buy Cardano

  1. Choose a platform

At the top you can see where your amount buys the most ADA, with every fee included.

  2. Open an account

Sign up and verify your identity. Licensed platforms are required to check who you are; it usually takes a few minutes.

  3. Add euros

For example by SEPA bank transfer or by card. Check the deposit fee on the platform first: it differs per method.

  4. Buy ADA

Enter the amount and confirm. Before you do, check the fee and the price the platform shows you.

Questions about Cardano

How much is 1 Cardano worth right now?

On 12 October 2026 at 19:27 CEST, 1 ADA was worth €0.22 on average: the median mid-market price on 7 platforms. The price changes all the time, and what you pay on a platform also depends on its fees.

Who is behind Cardano?

Charles Hoskinson and Jeremy Wood started the project in 2015. At launch, IOHK (now IOG) built the software, the Cardano Foundation was set up to oversee and promote the ecosystem, and Emurgo focused on commercial adoption. Today, Intersect coordinates development and maintenance, while protocol changes are decided on-chain.

How many ADA can there ever be?

The supply is capped at 45 billion ada. New ada only comes from a fixed reserve that pays out staking rewards and treasury funding, so the maximum cannot be raised by issuing more.

Does staking lock up your ADA?

Not on Cardano itself. When you delegate ada from your own wallet to a stake pool, the coins never leave your wallet, there is no lock-up period and you cannot lose ada through slashing. If you stake through a trading platform instead, that platform's own terms apply.

What happens to your ADA if a platform goes bust?

MiCA requires licensed platforms that hold coins for clients to keep them separate from their own assets, both legally and on the blockchain, so that the platform's creditors have no claim on them in an insolvency. That is not the same as a guarantee: crypto-assets are not covered by the EU deposit guarantee or investor compensation schemes.

Simple app or advanced trading, what is the difference?

In the simple app you buy with one tap, and the price often includes a markup. With advanced trading you place the order yourself on the platform's trading screen, where you pay a trading fee but usually no markup. Our comparison shows both modes, so you can check which one gives you more ADA for your amount.
