Background

What is Dogecoin?

By PlatformCrypto.eu editorial team · checked on

Dogecoin began as a joke. Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer launched it in December 2013 as a light-hearted take on the crypto craze, with the Shiba Inu dog from the "Doge" internet meme as its face. The joke stuck, and Dogecoin grew a large and loyal community of its own.

Under the hood it is a proof-of-work blockchain, much like Bitcoin. Miners add a block about every minute, and since 2014 they can mine Dogecoin together with Litecoin, so the same work secures both networks.

There is no maximum supply. Each block creates exactly 10,000 new DOGE, which comes to roughly 5.2 billion coins a year. The number of new coins is constant, so as the total grows, the yearly percentage of new supply slowly declines. The project has always presented DOGE as money to spend, and it is used for tips and small payments.

DOGE has a history of sudden jumps and steep falls. Its price can move a long way in a few days, in either direction.

How to buy Dogecoin

  1. Choose a platform

At the top you can see where your amount buys the most DOGE, with every fee included.

  2. Open an account

Sign up and verify your identity. Licensed platforms are required to check who you are; it usually takes a few minutes.

  3. Add euros

For example by SEPA bank transfer or by card. Check the deposit fee on the platform first: it differs per method.

  4. Buy DOGE

Enter the amount and confirm. Before you do, check the fee and the price the platform shows you.

Questions about Dogecoin

How much is 1 Dogecoin worth right now?

On 12 October 2026 at 19:27 CEST, 1 DOGE was worth €0.08 on average: the median mid-market price on 7 platforms. The price changes all the time, and what you pay on a platform also depends on its fees.

Is there a limit to how many dogecoins can exist?

No. Every block pays the miner a fixed 10,000 DOGE, and a new block arrives about once a minute. That adds roughly 5.2 billion DOGE a year, with no end date. Because the yearly amount stays the same while the total keeps growing, the percentage increase gets a little smaller every year.

How is Dogecoin mined?

With proof of work, using the Scrypt algorithm. Since 2014, Dogecoin has allowed merged mining with other Scrypt coins; at the time, [Litecoin](/buy-litecoin) was the most popular of those. Miners can then secure both networks with the same computing work and collect rewards on each.

Is Dogecoin the same as Shiba Inu?

No. Dogecoin uses the Shiba Inu dog from the "Doge" meme as its mascot. Shiba Inu (SHIB) is a separate coin with its own project, supply and price; it has its own page on our site, [buy Shiba Inu](/buy-shiba-inu).

Can you pay with Dogecoin?

Yes, as long as the seller accepts it. Dogecoin was meant to be used as a currency from the start. People tip each other in DOGE on social platforms, and some businesses accept it through third-party payment providers.

How do you compare Dogecoin prices between platforms?

We run your order, €100 by default, against each platform's live order book or public price, then deduct the trading fee, any app markup and the fee for your payment method. The platforms are ranked by how much DOGE you receive. Prices older than three minutes are never used; such a platform is shown without figures. See [how we compare](/how-we-compare) for the details.
