Background

What is Ethereum?

By PlatformCrypto.eu editorial team · checked on

Ethereum is a programmable blockchain. Besides simple transfers, it runs smart contracts: small programs that execute exactly as written once they are on the network. Tokens, stablecoins, lending services and many other apps are built this way. Vitalik Buterin set out the idea in a white paper in 2013, and the network went live on 30 July 2015.

The currency of the network is ether (ETH). You need it to pay for every action on Ethereum, from sending money to using an app, and these network fees are called gas. ETH is also what validators stake to secure the network.

That security model changed on 15 September 2022. Ethereum switched off mining and moved to proof of stake, a change that cut its electricity use by more than 99.9%, according to an estimate quoted by ethereum.org. Ether has no fixed cap: validators receive newly issued ETH, while part of every transaction fee is burned, so the supply rises or falls with network activity.

Ether trades around the clock and its value is not backed by anything. It can lose a large share of its value within weeks, or even days.

In four steps

How to buy Ethereum

  1. Choose a platform

At the top you can see where your amount buys the most ETH, with every fee included.

  2. Open an account

Sign up and verify your identity. Licensed platforms are required to check who you are; it usually takes a few minutes.

  3. Add euros

For example by SEPA bank transfer or by card. Check the deposit fee on the platform first: it differs per method.

  4. Buy ETH

Enter the amount and confirm. Before you do, check the fee and the price the platform shows you.

Questions about Ethereum

How much is 1 Ethereum worth right now?

On 12 October 2026 at 19:28 CEST, 1 ETH was worth €2,248.06 on average: the median mid-market price on 7 platforms. The price changes all the time, and what you pay on a platform also depends on its fees.

Is Ethereum the same as ether?

Not quite. Ethereum is the network; ether, ticker ETH, is the currency used on it. Platforms often list it as "Ethereum", but what lands in your account when you buy is ether.

What is gas, and do you pay it when you buy ETH?

Gas is the fee for getting an action processed on the Ethereum network, and it is always paid in ETH. A purchase on a trading platform is recorded in the platform's own books, so there you pay the platform's fees instead. Gas comes into play once you send ETH to another address, for example your own wallet.

Is there a maximum supply of ether?

No. New ether is issued to validators, and the amount depends on how many validators there are and how much they have staked. At the same time, the base fee of every transaction is destroyed. When the network is busy, more ether can be burned than created, so the total supply can shrink as well as grow.

Does Ethereum still use mining?

No. Mining was switched off on 15 September 2022, when Ethereum moved to proof of stake. Since then, validators who lock up ether propose and check new blocks. You cannot mine ETH any more; new ether only goes to validators.
