Background

What is XRP?

By PlatformCrypto.eu editorial team · checked on

XRP is the currency of the XRP Ledger, an open-source blockchain built for payments. Three engineers, David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto, began developing it in 2011, and the ledger went live in June 2012. They wanted a way to move value without the waste they saw in mining.

Instead of miners, the XRP Ledger relies on validators that compare proposals from peers they trust and settle on the next version of the ledger once enough of them agree. A transfer usually settles in three to five seconds and costs a tiny amount of XRP.

The supply works differently from most coins. All 100 billion XRP were created at the start and nothing new is ever issued; the small fee on each transaction is destroyed, so the total edges down over time. A large part of the supply went to the company now called Ripple. XRP is used as a bridge currency in cross-border payments and for small transfers.

Its exchange rate floats freely against the euro, so the value of your XRP can swing a long way in either direction.

In four steps

How to buy XRP

  1. Choose a platform

At the top you can see where your amount buys the most XRP, with every fee included.

  2. Open an account

Sign up and verify your identity. Licensed platforms are required to check who you are; it usually takes a few minutes.

  3. Add euros

For example by SEPA bank transfer or by card. Check the deposit fee on the platform first: it differs per method.

  4. Buy XRP

Enter the amount and confirm. Before you do, check the fee and the price the platform shows you.

Questions about XRP

How much is 1 XRP worth right now?

On 12 October 2026 at 19:28 CEST, 1 XRP was worth €1.22 on average: the median mid-market price on 7 platforms. The price changes all the time, and what you pay on a platform also depends on its fees.

Is XRP the same as Ripple?

No. XRP is the native currency of the XRP Ledger, a public blockchain. Ripple is a company. The ledger's founders gave 80 billion XRP to the company that later became Ripple, and in 2017 Ripple locked 55 billion XRP into escrow on the ledger so that its holdings would be released in a more predictable way.

How many XRP are there?

All XRP was created when the ledger started: 100 billion units, and no more can ever be made. Each transaction destroys a small amount of XRP as its fee, at least 10 drops for a standard transaction, so the total can only go down.

Do you need a destination tag to send XRP?

Often, yes. Exchanges and other hosted wallets tend to use one shared XRP address for many customers and use the destination tag to see whose account to credit. Leave it out and your deposit may not be credited automatically, or the ledger rejects the payment if the receiving address requires a tag. Always copy both the address and the tag.

Why does an XRP wallet need a minimum balance?

The XRP Ledger asks every address to hold a reserve. To activate a new address you must send it at least the base reserve, currently 1 XRP, and each extra item the address owns adds 0.2 XRP. The validators can change these amounts by vote. This mainly matters if you move XRP to a wallet of your own.

Can you buy XRP with a card?

Yes, on most platforms we compare, although some accept debit cards only. A card payment may cost extra on top of the trading fee: among the platforms whose card fees we have checked, the surcharge ranged from nothing to 4% (checked 7 October 2026). Pick "Card" in our comparison to see what that does to the amount of XRP you get.
