Background

What is Chainlink?

By PlatformCrypto.eu editorial team · checked on

A blockchain cannot look outside itself. A smart contract on Ethereum, for example, has no way of knowing the current price of an asset unless someone delivers that information. Chainlink is a network of independent node operators, known as oracles, that collect such data from outside sources and feed it to applications on many different blockchains. Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis co-founded the project, whose first white paper appeared in September 2017.

Over time the network has grown into a set of services. Data Feeds deliver market prices to decentralised finance apps, and CCIP, the Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol, moves tokens and messages between blockchains.

LINK is the network's own token. It was first issued on Ethereum and is used to pay for Chainlink services. Node operators and community members can also stake LINK as a kind of security deposit: they earn rewards, but a stake can be cut if performance requirements are not met. The total supply is fixed at 1 billion LINK, and no new tokens are created.

However widely the network is used, the token itself is volatile: a purchase of LINK can be worth noticeably more or less a few days later.

In four steps

How to buy Chainlink

  1. Choose a platform

At the top you can see where your amount buys the most LINK, with every fee included.

  2. Open an account

Sign up and verify your identity. Licensed platforms are required to check who you are; it usually takes a few minutes.

  3. Add euros

For example by SEPA bank transfer or by card. Check the deposit fee on the platform first: it differs per method.

  4. Buy LINK

Enter the amount and confirm. Before you do, check the fee and the price the platform shows you.

Questions about Chainlink

How much is 1 Chainlink worth right now?

On 12 October 2026 at 19:26 CEST, 1 LINK was worth €11.57 on average: the median mid-market price on 6 platforms. The price changes all the time, and what you pay on a platform also depends on its fees.

What is Chainlink used for?

Chainlink supplies blockchains with information they cannot get on their own, such as asset prices, and connects different blockchains with each other. Decentralised finance apps use its Data Feeds, for example, to know the current price of the assets they handle. Its CCIP protocol lets tokens and messages move between blockchains.

What is the LINK token?

LINK is the native token of the Chainlink network. It pays for Chainlink services and can be staked to help secure the network. LINK was first issued on Ethereum as an ERC-677 token, a standard that builds on ERC-20, and official LINK contracts now exist on many other blockchains too. If you ever withdraw LINK from a platform, check that the network you choose matches your wallet.

How many LINK tokens are there?

The total supply is capped at 1 billion LINK. That number does not grow, but not all of it is in circulation yet.

Can you stake Chainlink?

Yes, through Chainlink Staking. Node operators and community members can stake LINK and earn rewards for helping to secure the network. Chainlink points out that staked LINK can be slashed, meaning partly lost, if predefined performance requirements are not met, so read the terms before you stake.

Why do platforms show different prices for LINK?

Each platform has its own buyers and sellers, so its price for LINK depends on its own order book, or on the price it sets itself if it acts as a broker. On top of that come its trading fee, any markup in the simple app and, if you pay by card, a card fee. The same €100 can therefore buy noticeably different amounts of LINK. Our comparison runs your order against live data from each platform and ranks them by the LINK you receive after all those costs.
