Background

What is Bitcoin Cash?

By PlatformCrypto.eu editorial team · checked on

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) grew out of a long argument over how bitcoin should cope with growth. Bitcoin's blocks were capped at 1 MB, and as use increased they kept filling up, which pushed users to outbid one another to get a transaction through. One camp wanted to keep blocks small; the other wanted more room for payments on the chain itself. On 1 August 2017 the second camp went its own way after block 478,558, and its branch became Bitcoin Cash.

Many of the original rules survived the split. BCH is secured by SHA-256 proof of work, aims for one block every ten minutes and can never exceed 21 million coins. The block reward halves every 210,000 blocks; since the halving of April 2024, miners receive 3.125 new BCH per block on top of the fees. In November 2020 the network switched to a difficulty algorithm called ASERT, which recalculates with every block to hold the average interval near ten minutes.

Capacity is where the chains really part ways. The fork lifted the block size limit to 8 MB, an upgrade in May 2018 raised it to 32 MB, and since May 2024 an adaptive algorithm, ABLA, can push the ceiling higher as blocks get fuller, never dropping below 32 MB. The project's website puts a typical network fee at under a penny.

Development is not in the hands of one company. Several independent teams build node software, and agreed changes go live in a yearly upgrade on 15 May. That cycle brought CashTokens in 2023, a native way to issue tokens and NFTs, and in 2025 and 2026 gave the network's scripting language higher limits, larger numbers, loops and reusable functions for more complex contracts.

A shared past does not mean a shared price. BCH trades as a coin in its own right, and its euro value can fall steeply within days, whatever bitcoin happens to be doing.

In four steps

How to buy Bitcoin Cash

  1. Choose a platform

At the top you can see where your amount buys the most BCH, with every fee included.

  2. Open an account

Sign up and verify your identity. Licensed platforms are required to check who you are; it usually takes a few minutes.

  3. Add euros

For example by SEPA bank transfer or by card. Check the deposit fee on the platform first: it differs per method.

  4. Buy BCH

Enter the amount and confirm. Before you do, check the fee and the price the platform shows you.

Questions about Bitcoin Cash

How much is 1 Bitcoin Cash worth right now?

On 13 October 2026 at 14:24 CEST, 1 BCH was worth €240.21 on average: the median mid-market price on 5 platforms. The price changes all the time, and what you pay on a platform also depends on its fees.

Is Bitcoin Cash the same as bitcoin?

No. The two share one transaction history up to block 478,558, mined on 1 August 2017, but since the split they have been separate blockchains with separate coins and separate prices. Bitcoin trades as BTC and Bitcoin Cash as BCH. Coins sent on one chain do not show up on the other, and the two networks now follow different rules on block size.

How high are Bitcoin Cash network fees?

According to the project's website, a typical transaction costs less than one penny in network fees. There is little competition for space: when the ABLA proposal was written in early 2024, blocks were using only a few hundred kilobytes of the 32 MB allowed. This network fee is not the same as what a platform charges you to buy BCH; those trading costs are what our comparison adds up.

What does a Bitcoin Cash address look like?

Bitcoin Cash has its own format, CashAddr, specified in 2017. An address starts with the prefix bitcoincash: and continues with a string that usually begins with q for an ordinary address or p for a script address. Wallets sometimes hide the prefix. A built-in checksum catches typing mistakes. BCH also has an older address style that looks exactly like a bitcoin address, and CashAddr was designed to stop the two being mixed up. When you withdraw BCH to your own wallet, pick the BCH network and paste a BCH address, never a bitcoin one.

What are CashTokens?

CashTokens is the token system built into Bitcoin Cash, switched on with the upgrade of 15 May 2023. Anyone can use it to create fungible tokens, whose units are interchangeable, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), whose units cannot be merged or divided. The tokens live on the BCH chain itself, so there is no separate network to move them to.

Who decides on changes to Bitcoin Cash?

Changes start as public proposals called CHIPs, short for Cash Improvement Proposals, which developers discuss openly, for example on bitcoincashresearch.org. Proposals that the teams behind the node software accept are locked in around November and activate the following 15 May. The project's website says that no single group or project can control the network.
